This topic will help you to better identify workplace drama and learn how to handle situations when employees make excuses or blame others.

Estimates over the past five years have pegged workplace drama as behavior that may be costing employers as much as half a TRILLION dollars a year collectively. Wow. Imagine what that sum of money could buy organizations, even split up say $50,000 per employer. Do you think there is anything your organization could find to do with an extra $50,000 per year? The cost includes such items as separations (and its direct cost), lost productivity (both managerial and nonmanagerial), turnover (both of unproductive employees and their colleagues who leave to keep from having to put up with them any longer), and a generally inefficient, not very enjoyable place to work. This topic helps people responsible for directly or indirectly leading others to spot, drop, and roll unproductive behavior largely out of the organization. The material will also help you examine your own behaviors to determine whether or not you may be unintentionally (or intentionally) contributing to unproductive behaviors in others. Finally, you will be challenged to look at unproductive behavior from a systems rather than an individual contributor point of view.

Learning Objectives

  • You will be able to define workplace drama and other unproductive behavior.
  • You will be able to evaluate at a basic level unproductive behaviors in light of applicable employment considerations.
  • You will be able to discuss why clarity, communication, and courage are essential for stopping workplace drama.
  • You will be able to identify behaviors in your own interaction with others that may unintentionally be contributing to drama and how you might remove any unintended fuel from the drama.
